The Begum Organization for Women (BOW) is an Afghan non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organization, officially established on the 8th December 2020 and registered in the Ministry of Economy under the number #5063. BOW aims at defending, supporting and empowering all Afghan women.
In late 2020, anticipating the readiness of some to sacrifice women’s rights for the sake of peace, an Afghan businesswoman – Hamida Aman – mobilized her network of social activists, friends and colleagues and established a non-governmental organization (NGO) - the Begum Organization for Women (BOW) – with the aim of defending, supporting and empowering Afghan women.
“We simply didn’t want to be passive victims, recalls Hamida, we wanted to act. Most of us being media people, we decided to stick to what we do best: share our sisters’ stories and make their voices heard”.
Three months later, on March 8th, 2021, BOW launched Radio Begum.
Hamida Aman initiated the Begum Organization for Women (BOW).
Hamida is an Afghan media entrepreneur who founded the Awaz Media Group (AMG), an Entertainment & Media company based in Kabul.
Born in the Afghan capital, her family fled the war and went into exile in Switzerland when Hamida was six. She grew up in Lausanne, graduated from journalism faculty and worked as a journalist for Swiss print media.
When the Taliban regime collapsed in late 2001, she rushed to Kabul and never returned, working for different NGO supporting media development.
In 2004, she created Awaz - “the voice” in Dari language - a radio production company, which became over the years an Entertainment & Media group producing TV series, documentary movies and educational programs for the local market.
In 2020, she established the Begum Organization for Women (BOW).
